This Friday (March 5) marks the one-year anniversary since I attended a gig. A whole year without live music, something that would’ve seemed unimaginable back then, but right now feels hugely significant. Christ, what have I been doing?
Headlining that evening were Cardiff based Glass Jackets, a band I had been meaning to see for a while but for one reason or another I hadn’t got round to. I’m thankful I did. In another first that night I also got to see another Cardiff star Tom Auton, which brings me neatly to the subject of this review!
Tom Auton has always rocked hard, as anyone who has ever listened to his music/seen him live over the last few years will attest to. Big riffs, big choruses and grandiose production from someone who knows his way around a mixing desk. With “Victim Of The Groove” he has taken it up a notch, providing a festival of chunky guitar riffs with a bit of blues chucked in for good measure.
Comparisons to bands such as Royal Blood are inevitable and a fair assessment, but both the song and production reminds me of Jack White’s solo material, and as a huge fan of the Detroit bluesman, this is great to hear.
As well as producing for various other artists, Auton self-produces all of his own music and in this new tune he takes on the subject of assuming control of his own art and to a certain extent, destiny. Back in 2016 Auton got back a less than pleasing mix of a single, which kickstarted his desire to self-produce, and he hasn’t looked backed since. Here he bemoans “I’m losing all my hair to find I’m tarnished with the same old boring brush they use on every other artist”, whilst also dealing with the highs and lows that come with the territory of being a recording artist; a victim of the groove, so to speak!
At just 21 Auton is a precocious talent who, as well as releasing a string of exciting singles, can also add being shortlisted for Fender’s Undiscovered Artist of The Year to his CV. After a dry 2020 it’s great to see Auton back with new music of his own and we’ll certainly look forward to his next release!
