The Honest Poet – Purpose (single review)

It’s been a weird few weeks, y’know, what with the sun being back out again after six months or so of hibernation. What? Where did you think I was going with that intro?

But seriously, amongst all of the (for want of a better word) SHIT, a bit of sun has been a touch of positivity in a country looking for any sort of glimmer of hope and along with this sun came this gem of a tune by Chepstow’s The Honest Poet.

“Purpose”, coming in at just under three minutes is a glimpse of summer in a nutshell. With its light, breezy feel and a catchy chorus set against the backdrop of a simple but effective drumbeat reminiscent of The Streets and a glittery guitar riff, it has all the ingredients required to put a smile back on your face and give you a bit of, well, purpose!

Although written and recorded way before Covid hit us, “Purpose” contains a line that will undoubtedly resonate with all of us all right now. The Honest Poet wistfully sings “I wanna catch up with all the kisses I have missed”. Kisses, hugs, handshakes, a nod of the head, a beer. Right now, this seems a long distance away, but with releases such as “Purpose”, there’s still plenty to be cheerful about.
