I AM DRUG – THE D.O.N.A.L.D. EP (ep review)

Barry, for better or worse, is synonymous with probably two things. Firstly, the pleasure beach/holiday destination in a state of seemingly permanent decline and secondly, for being half of the location for the much-loved BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey. Just because it’s popular, it doesn’t mean it’s any good though, but I guess people like over-hyped dirge created for the purpose of mass consumption.

Although I could (evidently) spend the next few paragraphs trash talking Gavin and Stacey, I’m not going to. Instead I will heap praise on Barry Post-Apocalyptic Art Rockers “I AM DRUG”, who in six tracks provide anything but over-hyped dirge created for the purpose of mass consumption.

From the album name and cover (below), you will notice that the band aren’t keen on Donald Trump and if there was any question these may have been slap dash decision, it is quickly binned by opening track D.O.N.A.L.D. Political message aside the song is an in your face combo of swirling guitars and glam like overtones, setting a precedent for an EP full of relentless energy and raw power. Yes, like The Stooges.

The band barely come up for breath in the 23 minutes that make up this EP, filled with explosive guitars, driving drums and manic vocals. Peak delirium is reached during “Give Me Back My Mind”, they rip out your soul with “Dark Ages” before final track “Get Out” sees intensity turned up to 12, ending just as you begin to think the band are refusing to give you back your mind.

THE D.O.N.A.L.D EP is a raucous affair with much to love in the right mood. It might help you cope with the anger of your recycling not being collected (again), but if you’re looking for something to send you off to sleep, well, perhaps chuck on an unoffensive sitcom instead.

THE D.O.N.A.L.D EP was released at the backend of last year. Check it on Spotify here and check out the I AM DRUG Facebook page.
